ORGANISERS of a major music festival have been granted a premises licence to relocate it to Dorset.

The Echo revealed in December last year that organisers of Bestival were looking to move the event from the Isle of Wight to The Lulworth Estate, which also hosts the festival's sister show Camp Bestival.

Purbeck District Council has now granted the premises licence for Bestival 2017, with the event set to run from September 7 to September 10.

The plans submitted to the council suggested the festival could accommodate around 40,000 people, compared to the 30,000 currently catered for at Camp Bestival in July.

Organisers say that rearranging the site and allowing for a different type of audience will enable the extra capacity.

A spokesman for the festival said: "We are extremely happy to announce that Purbeck District Council have granted the premises licence for Bestival 2017 today.

"We have worked closely with Dorset Police and the Local Authority for the past 10 years on Camp Bestival and we are very much looking forward to continuing our work together to ensure that Bestival is a great success in its new location.

"We thank everyone locally for their continued support."
