WEEKS of night time closures in Swanage will take place later this month when the roads through the town centre are resurfaced.

The repairs are part of this year’s £15million highway maintenance programme, which includes £5.5m investment in resurfacing and £2.5m to treat the county’s worst ‘defect’ sites.

Five nights of work will start on Monday, October 31 to resurface Station Road, Institute Road, High Street and Kings Road East, finishing in the early hours of Saturday, November 5.

This will be followed with two nights work – starting on Monday, November 7 and finishing on Wednesday, November 9 – to resurface the section of Kings Road West between Kings Road East and Station Road.

There will be a road closures in place while the work is carried out.

At the same time, a section of Rempstone Road, at its junction with A351 Victoria Avenue, will be patched with stop/go boards in use.

All night work will start at 7pm and end 7am the following day.

Due to the nature of the work there will be noise, especially during the removal of the old road surfaces, and due to the volume of traffic that use these roads they are best worked on at night.

Andrew Martin, service director for highways, said: “We’ve been liaising closely with Swanage Town Council and local businesses to ensure we carry out this work at a time that will cause the least disruption to the community.

“Unfortunately this work will be noisy, especially during the planning operation to remove the old road surface, but hopefully residents can appreciate that there is no way for this work to be done during the day.”

In preparation to resurface Institute Road, a section of footway will have its kerb raised and the paved slabs replaced with a tarmac surface to temporarily improve the gradient of the path, which slopes steeply towards the road.

Work will start on Monday, October 10 and last for five days. The pavement will remain open but there will be some noise and dust from the work.

A minor improvement scheme in Institute Road is currently being finalised and is scheduled to be built late next year.

The new road surface will be slightly affected by this, however it has been agreed with Swanage Town Council that delaying the surfacing works any longer is unacceptable.

Further daytime resurfacing work in November is also planned for Osborne Road on November 10 and 11, Bon Accord Road (from Queen’s Road to Russell Avenue), Queen’s Road (from Osborne Road to Newton Road) and Townsend Road (from High Street to Cobblers Lane) from November14 to 18, and Town Hall Lane on November 21.

These roads will be closed from 9am to 4pm in order for the work to be carried out safely.
