ALMOST 100 metre-long model tanks made for a world record-breaking spectacle at The Tank Museum at the weekend.

The gathering of 1/6th scale armour tanks was the biggest ever seen, as 96 of these detailed replicas, ranging from First World War to Cold War tanks, were brought together at the Bovington museum on Saturday.

The Guinness World Record attempt was made in partnership with Armortek, the world's leading manufacturer of 1/6th scale armour kits, and saw enthusiasts come from far and wide to bring their impressive models to take part.

These miniatures lined up around their life-sized counterparts, breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest number of their kind assembled in one place.

Entirely British made these scale models run on tracks, include authentic sounds and move just like a real tank. Each model tank is approximately one metre long and weighs in at around 340lbs. They are capable of pulling a 7.5 ton truck, or climbing a muddy 45 degree slope.

Gill Watkins, who with her husband Mark owns Armortek, said: “All of the tanks brought together was a real sight to see - we’re so pleased to have broken this world record. It’s always incredible to witness the great enthusiasm and level of detail that goes into making these vehicles the best they can be.”

The attempt took place as part of the museum’s annual model exhibition TankMOD, where numerous model exhibitors descended on the museum to show off their creations and share their hints and tips for creating perfect models. Visitors were treated to a wide variety of models on the day, including boats, planes, cars and military vehicles.

The Tank Museum’s own volunteer modellers were on hand to share their hints and tips behind making a miniature tank, and Armortek's brand new Tiger 131 kit, based on the museum's famous tank, was also on sale at the event.

The details and evidence from the attempt has been sent to the Guinness World Record administrators for verification so that the world record can officially be given.
