PURBECK Marathon organisers are making last-minute preparations for Sunday's race.

Hundreds of runners are set to tackle the tough course, which is mostly off-road, when the starting pistol fires at the downs above Swanage Pier at 9.30am.

Now in its fourth year, the event has already established itself as a favourite among the UK's running fraternity.

New for 2015 will also be the shorter Purbeck 16, a sixteen mile race taking in much of the same route as the full marathon.

Both races finish on Sandpit Field, close to Swanage's seafront.

Race director Martin Payne said: "The Purbeck Marathon has become established as one of the top marathons in the country and we are very pleased by what has been achieved by a small team with the help of our partners and volunteers.

"The addition of a shorter event will allow more runners to experience the beauty and toughness of the Purbeck hills while raising more funds for local good causes."

In 2014 the marathon raised £6,000 for local charities and good causes, a 50per cent increase on the previous year.

Race organisers say the marathon only goes ahead because of the help of its many volunteers, and there's still time to step forward to become part of proceedings.

Entries for the marathon and The Purbeck 16 are now closed.
