Monkey World has released a video to show how two of its latest young orang-utan arrivals are progressing in their new home.

Baby Rieke was introduced to her new adopted brother, five-month-old Bulu Mata, at the Wool park in February.

Rieke, now nine-weeks-old, arrived from Berlin Zoo after her mother rejected her at birth.

Since then both babies have been flourishing at Monkey World’s orang-utan crèche, the only one of its kind in Europe.

Rieke, who takes on an average of 400mls of milk, now weighs a healthy 3kg, and Bulu Mata, who get through 500mls of milk daily, tips the scales at 4.53kg.

Bulu Mata, who arrived from Budapest Zoo after his mother died unexpectedly, is now climbing and cut his first baby tooth yesterday.

Monkey World staff say the six other orang-utans in the nursery are “very interested in both babies and in the coming weeks when Rieke is able to sit up we will begin to let the other youngsters visit and play with the babies.”

Monkey World director Dr Alison Cronin said: “It is an amazing international effort to provide two orphan orang-utans with the very best opportunity to grow up with others of their own kind.

“Berlin and Budapest Zoos have done a wonderful job in caring for these very vulnerable infants and we are pleased to be able to offer specialist care and facilities throughout the rest of their childhood.”
