THE road bridge over Swanage Railway’s restored track will close to traffic for almost the full two months of scheduled New Year gas mains work.

This eight-week project starts on January 5, but for the first seven days it will only involve temporary two-way traffic lights – starting at the Victoria Avenue/Ancaster Road junction and moving eastwards.

When work moves onto the rail bridge the following week, the line underneath will close until February 13. However, the road closure at the bridge will remain in place until the whole project finishes at the end of February.

SGN construction manager Alan Thompson said: “We have worked with Dorset County Council to schedule the project, which is being completed during the winter when traffic tends to be lighter in Swanage.

“We are also very mindful of the work’s likely impact on the operation of the Swanage Railway, therefore, it will coincide with the shutdown of the line for a period of maintenance.

“We will be doing everything we can to minimise disruption and complete our works as quickly as possible.”

This project, as previously reported in the Daily Echo, is to replace Victoria Avenue’s aging gas main with a modern plastic pipeline boasting an 80-year lifespan.

Mr Thompson added: “This means less long-term disruption and a safe and regular supply of gas to homes and businesses for many years to come.

“We understand that roadworks can be very frustrating and we’re very sorry for the inconvenience caused. We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we carry out our essential works.”
