THE fire on a landfill site in Wareham which has been burning since Sunday afternoon is out.

One fire crew remains on the scene at the Viridor landfill site, on Bere Road, near Wareham Forest, to dampen down the hot spots which remain amongst the rubbish.

Contractors for Viridor are assisting Dorset Fire and Rescue Service to dig out the rubbish and are also set to bring in their own fire appliances this afternoon.

A spokesperson for DFRS confirmed that the blaze had now been extinguished and said that all crews are set to leave the site by 5pm today.

Incident commander, Angus Nairn, who spoke to Daily Echo from the scene of the blaze, said: “We have diggers from Viridor who are working to take out the hotspots and we are just here to supervise that, incase we are needed.

“But the main thing is that the fire is effectively out.”

He said that he visited the fire on Monday and so has seen the blaze at its worst before it was put out.

“It was a fully developed fire when we got here on Sunday and when I saw the extent of it myself, I thought that we would be fighting it for at least a week or two.

“Viridor have been great and have just cracked on with helping and assisting us. They have their own fire investigation department, with a member of staff travelling over from America to investigate the cause of this incident.

“The work of everyone from Viridor and obviously the fire fighters themselves has been incredible and it is great to see the end result of the fire going out.”

Earlier this week, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said that 39 of the 40 fire engines from within the county had visited the Viridor landfill site to help battle the flames.

In addition, their colleagues from Hampshire had also assisted by providing high volume pumps to dampen down the flames.
