Snow baby born at Swanage Hospital - first there for 30 years

IF you thought you had a hectic start to the day, spare a thought for new Swanage mum Sinead Mellor.

Sinead went into labour in the early hours yesterday morning but was forced to turn back from Poole Hospital because the road was blocked due to cars stuck in the snow at Corfe Castle.

So her quick-thinking father-in-law made an about turn and drove Sinead and husband Martin back to Swanage Hospital, where no baby had been born for almost 30 years.

The Mellors, who arrived at the hospital’s minor injury unit before it opened, were let into the building by a startled hospital chef.

But the NHS staff did an amazing job and bouncing baby boy Kyran, weighing 6lb 9oz, was delivered around 9.50am.

Both mother and baby are said to be doing well.

Proud granddad Mr Mellor said: “Poole Hospital wanted me to take Sinead back home and wait for an ambulance, but I knew there was a risk they wouldn’t get through or would be too late.

“I didn’t doubt for one minute that Swanage Hospital would help us. We’re really grateful for their help and support and thrilled about the safe arrival of baby Kyran.”

Staff confirmed Kyran is the first baby to be born at Swanage Hospital for almost 30 years.

They added: “There was a quiet hush of excitement and anticipation in the corridors this morning as everyone went about their business while waiting for the baby to arrive. Everyone feels thrilled to have been a part of this wonderful occasion.”

Congratulations to you both, what wonderful news. That will be a very original place of birth to have on your baby's birth certificate and passport. In the dealings we have had with Swanage Hospital, staff have always been very professional and caring. Good luck keeping your new arrival warm!

Just remember the wonderful Health Authorities are trying their hardest to close this wonderful hospital down. As a resident of Swanage I have on many occasions been so grateful to be able to use the minor injuries unit for myself and my family, instant attention by caring staff. I wish I could say the same when I have had to attend Poole A&E, I had to wait for 3 hrs 59 mins before being seen. KEEP SWANAGE HOSPITAL OPEN.

Who cares what football teams top they're wearing? For goodness sakes, here's a happy mum and healthy baby being born in a hospital not a car in a snowy lay by. Get your priorities right!
