  • POLICE have sealed off a house, next to Poole Hospital's multi-storey car park on Longfleet Road, this morning.

4:33pm

Dorset Police have just issued the following statement:

Detectives in Poole are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward after a man subjected a woman to a late night serious sexual assault.

The incident happened along Longfleet Road, near to the BP garage, at approximately 2am on Monday 20 August 2012. The area has been cordoned off while enquiries continue and an examination is being carried out by specialist crime scene investigators.

The victim, a Poole woman in her twenties, describes the offender as a white man, approximately six feet tall, with short fair hair. He was wearing a dark coloured hooded top or coat.

Detective Inspector Steve Thorpe, of Bournemouth and Poole CID, said: “This is a nasty unprovoked attack on a woman walking on her own along Longfleet Road.

“I am very keen to find the offender as soon as possible and I urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to us in confidence.

“I would like to stress that attacks of this nature are not common in the Poole area.

“I would also like to remind residents and visitors – as we do throughout the year – to be conscious of their own personal safety.

“It is essential that everyone takes a common sense approach and trusts their instincts – if you don’t feel comfortable in a particular area, then take another route.

“All year round and all over the country, there are many things that people can do to ensure that they are safe, such as walking with friends, carrying a mobile phone and letting people know where you are.

“There are also numerous ways to find additional advice, such as speaking with Safer Neighbourhood Team officers and accessing websites such as the Dorset Police homepage and the Suzy Lamplugh site.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 20:34. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.

She says the screens came down from the property at around 1pm and the forensic tent has now been taken down.

12:26pm

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “Around 2am this morning (August 20) the police were called to a serious incident in the area of Poole's Longfleet Road.
“Enquires are at a very early stage and we would encourage anyone who saw or witnessed anything suspicious in the area at this time to contact police.”
Call 101 or alternatively dial Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

More from Juliette at the scene in Longfleet Road.

She says one neighbour told her they heard screaming in the early hours of Monday morning. Others said they had heard nothing until police arrived at around 2.30am, while some woke up to the drama later.

Several neighbours said they had been told the incident was a serious assault.
They had seen up to 14 police markers tracing a trail of blood.

They said officers had told them the incident was nothing to do with anyone who lived in the property.

There were around half a dozen police cars around the house and forensic officers in white suits and masks were continuing to comb the scene.

9:59am

Juliette has been speaking to people who live in neighbouring flats. They were woken by police this morning asking about a "serious assault".

She says there is a forensic tent in the front garden of the building, which is divided into flats.

And dogs/dog owners!
All joking aside tho, it's a very closed in looking property with all those bushes about. Nastiness again :-(

Prime building land attracts the crime bosses eager to grab a buck or two; hence the incidents? Could be.

Echo - your "Google" map location (A) is about 200metres NE of the site, on the wrong side of Poole Hospital.

How about the guy that caried out this attack being told to walk with friends so there are witnesses around to stop him doing this again.
At what time exactly does the curfew on women walking down the street alone start and finish as far as common sense is concerned? And does this mean that we can't do shift work at hospitals or anywhere else that involves parking in a multistorey or walking past one? What about all the cleaners who have to walk to work before anywhere is open and it is dark. If I were a nurse or any other female working at Poole Hospital I would be outraged by the police comments on this case, basically blaming the victim for being out alone at night in that area. Disgusting and unfortunately all too typical. And another thing, why does every police quote in this paper start with thestock phrase that there is hardly any crime in Dorset? Aren't they writing it down any more?

I want to know why the Echo has not changed the headline and made more of a warning about this, surely women in Poole need to be made aware that their safety is at risk. Obviously the surf reef is more newsworthy....

Just looked at the headline. The house is not sealed off. It is the lane going to the car park behind the building.

@ashleycross, the police did not say for the attacker to walk with friends *facepalm* that is a suggestion for keeping safe, also it is not a curfew for women but it is common sense which regardless of being male or female everyone should apply when travelling on their own regardless of the time. of course you would be outraged at the police for their quotes as you did not even read them correctly and have made up your mind that the world is out for women and it is blaming them for being vunerable, realistily however it is good advice that the police have given out although to ensure females with these dangerous lonesome walks are safe they could have added you can carry a knife with a blade length of 3.0" or less so long as it is capable of folding. if the criminals know their is a chance she may be carrying a blade they would think twice before commiting attacks like this.

Dorset Police 'Service' has adetection rate of 22% of all 'reported' but as you may know they have made it more dificult to repot crime due to the closure of many stations. Basically its the political parties that 'enjoy' the service-not the people who have to pay for it!
