Big variations in fuel costs across Dorset

FILLING the average car at petrol stations across the Daily Echo’s readership area can differ by as much as £4.50.

Generally, unleaded and diesel prices are costlier in rural Dorset, compared with urban areas like Poole and Bournemouth – but there are exceptions.

The Esso garage on the A31, near Charris Camping and Caravan Park, at Corfe Mullen, is selling unleaded at 110.9p a litre.

This is nine pence less than at the rural independent Gulf petrol station at East Knighton, where a driver filling up the average 50-litre fuel tank would be £4.50 worse off.

Meanwhile, unleaded at Wool’s Texaco garages is 118.9p and diesel is 120.9p, while unleaded at Poole’s Fleets Corner Tesco garage is 111.9p and 114.9p for diesel.

Luke Bosdet, from the AA, said: “I think the big question about cost can be answered by whether or not you have an Asda in your neighbourhood, as this is the supermarket that has clearly nailed its colours to the mast of cheap prices.

“If you have an Asda, other retailers will bring their prices down to try and compete.”

Poole’s Asda at Canford Heath is selling unleaded for 110.9p and diesel at 113.9p.

Mr Bosdet said: “We have seen some independent garages being quite aggressive on pricing, but they are relatively few and far between.”

But the AA says the Bournemouth area hasn’t figured predominantly in the south and south west, when it comes to high fuel costs.

“The big rip off areas in the south seem to be the M4 in and around Reading, the Blackwater Valley, then the Kent ports and the area around Gatwick Airport,” says Mr Bosdet.

He added: “Petrol sales have fallen at rural stations according to latest figures. We are worried about rural stations.

“The less people go to these stations, the fewer opportunities they have to sell other stuff, like groceries, which is their main source of income.

“Businesses that have been up and running for years could go to the wall and drivers will have to travel further to get their fuel, which is a waste of fuel and increases carbon emissions.”

St Albans area Herts is always cheaper just yards off the J21A M25 at Chiswell Green, if you are passing by !!
Even then its is not a cheap price to pay for petrol ,
And does not the regulator (previous Tory Goverment innovation) kick in next month, putting it up again.

Can someone please explain to me why so many private motorists continue to use BP garages when their fuel prices are invariably so much higher than those of their competitors?

I recall that in an interview a couple of years ago, the chairman of BP was asked that question and in his arrogance simply denied it to be the case.

Try driving from Ferndown to Bridport - its cheeper to fill up at either the Esso garage on the A31 (110.9) or The Shell Garage at Bere Regis (113.9 save a ltr of fule per tank) than in any of the towns. Tesco is one of the most expensive petrol providers due to profit margins & the reason its so expensive according to staff is they only compare prices to any other petrol stations within 1 mile of them, to be competative, there is NO company wide price fix only local. This is why when they have the 5p off a ltr coupon in store, people shop in their local store & then drive & fill up at the cheepest tesco petrol station, often in Poole, saving not only the 5p but as I found last time an additional 5p = 10 p per ltr which is a saving of 45p a Gallon !!! you do the maths on a 5 or 6 gallon tank or for a large vehicle an even bigger saving so its worth the drive. Its a pitty the Shell station at Bere Regis will be shut for refurbishment for a month soon.

Easy see the first post. Fleetsbridge Tescos has that to compete with. You don't get that at Ferndown.

The worst in the area has to be the Texaco on Fairmile Rd.
Avoid this at all costs their prices are sky high, worse than BP. A total rip off, and non of the staff seem to speak English very well.

I think if one petrol station is too expensive, then you should go to a cheaper one - that will teach them!

cant understand why people continue to use the expensive petrol stations? of course if you live in a rural area you have less chance but one assume that if you do enough driving to empty your tank that isn't all done around country lanes? The situation hasn't really changed and has always been this way! I know when i lived in the country on the occasions i came into Poole i always filled up then!!! if its only 2 p difference tho that's only £1 difference for 50 litres so come off it?

I just filled my car at the BP station in Portland, Maine, for $2.52 a US gallon - that's L1.93 per UK gallon - 43p per litre.

It's tax that makes the difference, not oil company profits or the price of a barrel of oil.

What difference does it make to petrol prices if the staff dont speak good english, there really was no need to add that part to your comment was there.
When I go to a petrol station I go for fuel not a conversation.

"Big variations in fuel costs. . ."

So what! Isn't that the case with all consumer products?

Another non-story.
