Motorists confused by 30mph and 40mph speed limit signs at Bakers Arms roundabout

SO is it a 30mph or a 40mph zone? That’s the question, but does anyone know the answer?

This is the confusing juxtaposition of speed limit markers that has been baffling drivers as they head into Lytchett Minster from the Bakers Arms roundabout for over a week.

According to Dorset County Council the mishap arose when the speed limit was lowered on August 20 – and drivers should only pay attention to the 30mph sign, which “takes precedence”.

Clear as mud?

Ben Dalton, manager of St Peter’s Finger pub in Lytchett Minster, called the signs and changing speed limits “pretty poor and confusing”.

He added: “There’s a lot of tourists round here as well – it’s confusing even for me and I do the route about 10 times a week.”

Paul Johns, ward councillor for Lytchett Minster and Upton West, said: “I’m very concerned.

“It’s confusing for everyone and needs to be rectified.”

He said it was “ridiculous” to have two speed limits on the same road at the same time, and the public “weren’t to know” which took precedence. A Dorset County Council spokesperson said the strange mix of markers came about when the 30mph speed limit in Lytchett Minster was extended all the way along Dorchester Road back to the roundabout – previously a short 40mph stretch.

He added: “The signs were changed to display the new speed limit but unfortunately, due to heavy rain, our contractors were unable to complete the removal of the 40mph painted roundel, as this requires the road to be dry.

“The old 40mph roundel has been marked with spray paint for removal and will be repainted this week.

“Drivers should take note of the 30mph sign, which takes precedence.”

This is confusing, but then aren't signs in general? Which is why I now drive blindfolded, so as not to be distracted by them.

I'm sure all those people who moan about having to stare at their speedos whenever there's a speed camera will agree with me. Remember, use gaffer tape to cover the speedo so it can't distract you!

The Dorset County Council spokesperson sounds exactly the type of person to work for a local authority. Common sense missing and detached from reality.
I expect he/she went on the same training course as the Poole Council spokesperson who said the average speed cameras being trialled in Springdale Road as there to protect children going to Springdale First School.

The signs are confusing yes, but with a 30 sign there, anyone even trying to get away with fines for doing a 40 is just silly. The council should remove the 40mph sign as the 30 went up, that's fair enough, but if people honestly get confused and risk a higher speed, then they obviously don't have common sense, or a sense of responsibility.

It would seem that a lot of motorists go out in their vehicles but leave behind their common sense and sense of responsibility.

Did it not occur to them to remove the white paint ahead of the 30 limit coming in, at a suitably sunny juncture? The roundel on the road isn't necessary for enforcement, so get rid before it has the chance to cause confusion. Why would you leave it until the last minute when there's every chance of work not being possible?

And local authority workers wonder that they have such a poor reputation...

Steady on, twobigdogs.
Now you're indulging in knee-jerk reaction.
You're not going to tell me that as a motorist you've never muttered or hollered some expletive or other at another motorist for cutting across you, tailgating you, turning without signalling, or any one of a host of other irksome driving errors that fellow motorists heap on us, and - let's be honest here - we heap on them.
One piece of advice given to motorists by expert drivers is: treat other road users as idiots.
So, you see, my comment is not 'anti-motorist drivel' after all.

Yeah, because saying that some motorists are irresponsible is the same as saying they're all scum. I get your point. You talk a lot of sense.

As the article says, the sign takes precedence.

Alternatively, if in doubt, assume the highest possible allowed speed is always the one to obey, then moan when one day you find it actually wasn't ;-)

Also, on this stretch of road, you'll quite soon find yourself in a built-up area with street lights, so the default is 30 anyway, and there's the small matter of a school (very strangely located, I admit) with most pupils walking or cycling to Upton.

No one takes any notice of speed limits anyhow. Thank goodness the cameras are coming down, then us harmless speeders won't ever have to worry again. I only do about 20mph over the limit (sorry, can't be exact since I've covered up my speedo with gaffer tape to avoid the deadly device distracting me) anyhow, so it's not as if I'm a danger to anyone.
---
And don't worry, when I've had a few drinks I slow down to compensate for my slower reaction times – so it's just the same as if I'm sober but speeding. Speeding, drink-driving… same thing really.

I don't think there's even room for the traditional car/speeding/camera arguments on this one.
The 30 sign shouldn't have been erected until the 40 had been removed, it's nothing more than simple bureaucratic incompetence and in any other walk of life that's all it'd be seen as.

Oh dear, you must be so disappointed you can't start copying and pasting all that text again… that no one, NO ONE, ever reads. How sad.

does anyone here not actually know anything about the highway code FFS? it is quite clear what the speed limit is from the only sign in the picture! which funnily enough fits the description and examples shown in the highway code!!!! the paint on the road is irrelevant!!! If i went along and painted 100 in a big circle on the spur road i bet some idiot would try and use it as an excuse for speeding!!!!!!
