Will Poole Park lake flush stop the stink?

SMELLY Poole Park lake has been emptied out again as the council steps up lake flushings in a bid to tackle the nasty niff.

The pungent odour, likened to open sewers by some, is caused by rotting weeds.

It has been irritating noses in the area for over a month – prompting fears among local businesses that it could keep visitors away.

But yesterday, after the lake was flushed out overnight, the smell had gone – temporarily at least.

The 40-acre salt-water lake turned green in June after the warm weather brought about an explosion of tassleweed below the water and blanket weed on top.

Unable to treat it with chemicals due to environmental legislation, Borough of Poole added blue vegetable dye to the water at the end of June to reduce the sunlight reaching the weeds.

But as they rot they are creating the unwelcome smell.

The council has ruled out mechanical removal on the grounds of cost and impracticality due to the vast quantity of weeds, leaving flushing out the lake more frequently the only option.

It involves lowering the sluice gate and allowing the lake to refill with the tide, increasing salt levels and lowering the temperature, which restricts weed growth.

The blue dye is also being regularly topped up.

The lake was last flushed out on Monday evening.

The council is also planning further winter work, which could include a full drain post-Christmas, the removal of silt to clear the drainage channels and upgrading the sluice gate in a bid to cut the chance of the weeds returning.

Cllr Peter Adams, cabinet portfolio holder for Leisure, Borough of Poole, said: “I would like to assure residents, visitors and businesses that we are doing all we can to resolve this as soon as possible, both in the short and longer-term.”

He reiterated that the lake remains safe to use.

Water quality tests are being carried out regularly. The lake is currently flushed approximately six times a year.

As of last night, the smell had been improved but not banished.

Has anyone thought of using a couple of bails of barley straw?
I wonder if it would work on tassleweed and blanket weed, small bags of it work wonders in garden ponds controlling algae?

Barley straw is to high tech. It definitely works on algae.

So sad, I remember the old days at least 80's when you could still hire a rowing boat or canoe with friends to paddle about.

There was no algae or weed in those days....even so the lake water was warmer than sea water the light shone to almost 3m in depth. Something has gone horribly wrong with the marine biology of the lake since then and I am sure it is something to do with the council re-development crazy plan.

Why were shallow marine specialist biologist not consulted on this before the council approved re design work?

Its all starting to stink a bit like the failed surf reef in Bos-Vegas.....and if they did why wasnt it put to public vote?

More major decisions and town planning should be made more public and not just a 7 to 28 day ad in the Echo to promote its intensions - local radio and internet also should be given town planning notification for approval too for public feedback.

As has been said by several people before on this issue ,last winter and spring rockley water sports who run the lake now stopped the council from regulary flushing the lake before the algae had chance to get a foot hold .Now we are all suffering for this we Know best approach .

If you read the posts more regulary someone from rockley posted on here they have infact been requesting the lake to be flushed more often. Council should just invest the money to mechanically remove the weed. Id be quite happy to assist and go round with a big net and help clear the weed

dorsetranger i think the owner of rockley posting was worded "we now want it cleared more often" which is now a bit late as he /they didnt want to lose hire time when the council advised it should be flushed as it has been for many years, but perhaps he should set the record straight on this ?
