Poole High Street traders hit by road closure

RILED by roadworks and aggrieved by the smell of gas, Poole traders hit by a three-month road closure say their businesses are paying the price.

Shops at the lower end of Poole High Street say custom has plummeted since the gas main replacement work began on January 11.

The work has closed the road to cars and it is barely accessible to pedestrians, according to the traders, who say their customers are turning back thinking they’re shut.

Now, almost four weeks in, things have gone from bad to worse, according to Fay Barnes, manager of Gemini gift shop.

She says there is now just a two-foot gangway to her shop, and the smell of gas has left her with a headache and feeling nauseous.

“When I came in this morning there was a horrific gas smell,” she said. “I feel sick and I’ve got a headache. I usually light incense but I daren’t light anything in case there’s a gas leak.”

She says her shop is empty, and she is shutting some days and closing early others.

She added: “I’m not taking any money in the week. When people come down here they walk away when they see all the mess.”

A spokesman for Southern Gas said “a residual smell of gas” was to be expected on mains replacement projects. But he advised anyone who smelt a strong smell to speak to a manager on site who “can do tests there and then to see if there is a leak.”

He added: “We do understand businesses’ concerns about loss of takings and loss of trade, that is what our compensation policy is there for, in line with Ofgem’s recommendations.”

See Steve Kent been sending out more copies of his book "how to moan about everything," I wonder who would do the moaning if the old gas main wasn't replaced and exploded? People moan they want work done, then moan when it gets done. At least businesses can get compensation for these sorts of things, ordinary people get nothing. So stop moaning, shut your shop, go on holiday and claim the compensation when you get back.

Not all of the traders are complaining. A couple of weeks ago a trader called Inner Sanctum were on here saying that there wasn't really a problem. Perhaps Fay Barnes should speak to them.

1. These mains replacement works are obviously necessary.

2. Why are they not a 24/7 task, the Borough of Poole is like one great construction site at the moment. Get on with the job and let us have our streets back.

Not just Poole, Boscombe too! St Johns Road & Adeline Road shut with no sign of any digging for first 2 days! Barely 6 months since the gas board last dug up the area. Noticed Alma Road in Winton shut too at the moment!

The problem is, the road is dug up, then one or two men fiddle about and take weeks. It's not that hard. Dig hole, replace pipe, tarmac. It could be done in a week.
The repairs further up the high street took months. Days and days would go by with no one working. Weeks sometimes. No doubt maintenance staff have been cut back to the core. Not good enough.

Walked past it this afternoon, a lovely bright Sunday, and not a sign of any work being done. The site was closed up for the weekend.
I realise that to do works at the weekend would cost more money and cause disruption but better a shorter concentrated effort than this drawn out saga.

.
Perhaps she should visit her doctor - the stress of watching her non-essential (hippy) gift shop becoming a victim of the recession is far more likely to be the cause of her 'illness'. Or maybe it's over-sensitivity to incense!
.
A quick chat to the foreman of the works would get her a gas leak test and he would tell her the smell is actually a residual one from the earth being dug up.
