Vandals cause ‘wilful’ damage to coach fleet

Around £3,000 of “wilful” damage was caused to eight coaches in a determined attack at a depot in Poole.

Vandals struck at Roadliner on the Nuffield Estate, overnight on Tuesday, using a vehicle to drag a hole in the 8ft high iron fencing to target the £1.8m fleet of vehicles.

A company driver arriving at 5.15am yesterday was shocked to discover damage to the coaches, including smashed wing mirrors and mangled windscreen wipers.

One vehicle seemed to have been particularly targeted with the public address system also ripped out of it.

Mark Self, managing director of the Poole-based company, said they were having to make running repairs throughout the day, taking vehicles off the road to do so.

“We luckily managed to codge together a service,” he said. “A couple ran late because of it and people were missed. It’s most frustrating.”

He said the security systems at the depot were “very robust” but the damaged vehicles were those furthest away from the CCTV cameras.

“So much care and pride is taken with them by all the staff here, that’s what’s frustrating, the wilful vandalism,” he said.

“My vehicles were beautiful. It was a crying shame to see them all damaged at the front,” he added.

Dorset Police has confirmed the damage to the eight coaches was reported to them around 6am yesterday.

“We would appeal for anyone who witnessed any criminal damage or any suspicious activity in and around the area overnight to contact us,” said a spokesman.

Anyone with information should contact Dorset Police on 01202 222222 or free and anonymous Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Like the Police really care two hoots about this!!! They're far too busy dealing with 'real crime' like setting up sneaky speed cameras or checking up on health and safety. Mark my words, no-one will ever be tracked down or punished for this - as usual.

Poole is finished.

Don't let the b******* grind you down Mark, whether they be jealous competitors or mindless morons. Get the fleet back in shape and keep setting the standard locally. At least, despite adversity, you tried to cover all your services. Some locally are have not been too good at that in the past.
Keep up the good work. Your customers will support you as you are doing it right!

I would just like to thank the on-line respondants and our loyal customers (Schools, Councils and colleges) for the support received yesterday during our hour of need. Thankfully, the Dorset Police Force have been superb and have a line of enquiry to follow and Scenes Of Crime Officers have taken valuable evidence away to cross-reference against known criminals within our local coaching industry.

However, I place on file my dissapointment that the support received from our once close-knit industry has been surprisingly poor and with the exception of one local operator, the offers of help have been somewhat sparce considering the efforts that my company has offered (in similar circumstances) to companies in the past.

Localsfirst, what a load of old rubbish. Your observations are as lazy as some of the Echo articles on here.

Like the police are far too busy catching and charging the people who attacked the poor lad in Boscombe? Like the police are too busy catching the armed robber from the Nationwide (where the Echo headline was misleadingly 'Armed Robber Escapes with cash' No he didn't he was arrested that evening), hmmm they are really too busy with sneaky speed cameras (they are set up by DSCP and not Dorset Police) and by the way... you really need to get your facts right and give the tired old yawn boring lazy predictable statements like yours a rest!
