AN 11-STOREY tower could dominate Poole Quay’s skyline if a multi-million pound waterfront hotel and residential development gets the go ahead.
Patch Properties, has submitted an application to Poole council which includes a 149-bed hotel with 11-storey tower, as well as more than 150 homes in blocks up to six storeys, plus shops and public space.
It is the developer’s second proposal for the Quay Thistle Hotel and former East Quay Depot site, for which it paid £19 million in 2006. The first – which included 260 flats and a seven-storey hotel – was withdrawn in September when Poole planners listed 18 reasons for refusing.
The latest plans, particularly the 11-storey tower, have sparked objections, including from the Society of Poole Men. In a letter to planners, the society urged “that the top floor become a public view deck”, adding “such a tall building” without public access would be a “loss of a very valuable amenity.” They also expressed concern over the underground car park and flood risks.
Neighbours at Baiter Gardens, which has more than 50 sheltered accommodation units, are also worried. Anthony Soar, 72, said the noise and dirt produced by the building work would be “very stressful”.
“There just isn’t the infrastructure to support it,” he added. “I accept the area needs to be developed – at the moment it’s an eyesore – but the scale of the project is ridiculous.”
Jacqueline Mulliner, technical director at planning specialist Terence O’Rourke, which is working on the scheme, said: “It has been agreed with the council a dynamic building should be provided. The design, and proposed heights, have therefore been a positive choice, made in consultation with the council and English Heritage.”
She said they believed the scheme would make “a significant and positive contribution to the town.”
She confirmed the public would have access to some parts of the hotel, but not the tower.
The target date for decision is September 9.

Excellent plans. It will modernise and improve the whole quayside area.
Oh - apparently we're supposed to object to anything which addresses the inevitable medium-term growth in the area. Why not make it like Miami, or even Sydney? Perhaps the old hotel site should be replaced with 1930's style 2 up 2 downs to fit in with the rest of the area.
I agree with the Poole Men that making the upper level open to the public would be a good idea, and a couple of restaurants with views over the harbour would surely bring extra revenue to the hotel.
