Wardens on patrol at Dorset nudist beach

A FAMOUS nudist beach where a string of sexual offences have been reported is being targeted to make it safer.

Three new community wardens were due to begin patrolling Studland’s beaches today.

Police have teamed up with the National Trust and Studland Beach Users Action Group to get the scheme off the ground in time for the summer.

The wardens have been trained by Dorset Police and the National Trust and will patrol throughout July and August, offering help to beach users in addition to police patrols and beach rangers.

Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant Des Connor said: “Studland has welcomed naturists for more than 90 years and continues to do so within an area designated as an official UK naturist beach.

“However, from time to time, we receive reports of sexual misconduct or activity that threatens to bring naturism into disrepute.”

He said between summer 2005 and summer 2008 nine sexual offences were recorded in Studland.

The wardens – who will wear bright yellow T-shirts – will also be a point of contact for problems such as littering, unauthorised fires and barbecues, dog fouling and illegal parking.

They will be handing out surveys to visitors on how the area can be improved.

Sgt Connor added: “We will not tolerate any unlawful behaviour and ask that all residents and visitors to the area respect the naturists and the freedom in which they wish to enjoy life.

“This new venture will reduce any opportunity for anti-social behaviour and provide even more high-visibility reassurance to all beach users that Studland is a safe place to be with their families."

Emma Wright, visitor and services manager with the National Trust, said: “The new community wardens will work in partnership with our existing staff, but will be able to achieve greater interaction with visitors by being on foot.”

I remember more years ago than I care to admit, when "mounted" policemen were on patrol at Shell Bay/ Studland on the lookout for shenanigans in the dunes. I was quietly sunbathing on my own (no meer-catting) and the only danger was when plod's nag nearly trod on my head as he trotted over the dunes. And it's been "eyes out to sea" there since Adam was a lad!

The advantage of nudity is that body fat cannot be hidden.

Could the wardens hand out leaflets containing diet and exercise advice to the clinically obese nudists? I think this would be a useful additional function.

One was stood at Hengistbury Head - although he had the smallest string thong you could imagine - not budgie smugglers, he'd be lucky to get a hummingbird in those, posing prat.

Wardens should be in the nuddy too!

Plenty gathered around the pier - and clothed. Some swimwear, especially stringy stuff on over size 16s only exaggerates one's size. Trussed chickens. In Studland, being completely naked shows what a fat b***ard you are without using swimwear to draw attention to it....

....attention is drawn to other things though, even worse to look at... ahem...'cough'

Shocked and stunned a whole 9 offences committed over a 3 year period.

Have these offence counters ever been to Bournemouth on a saturday night. You can watch a live grumble show in every park bush and hedge row throughout the town. If you wander onto a nudist beach and some people are hiding their nuditity I fail to see how that is anywhere near as "wrong" as a drunken pikey getting a knee trembler in Bournemouth where we are not in a naked peoples area. Please get a life and find something more constructive to spend the money on.

P.S. Love the Budgie comment priceless :)

I'm not too sure what your points is BrianBrain (nor, I suspect, do you).

So the offences are usually.

Sexual activity within site/ close proximity of others.

Inappropriate behaviour within site/ close proximity of others.

Sadly a small minotity of visitors regard the naturist part of Studland as a place to solicit for sexual partners and engage in sexual acts.

This can cause upset to many when they are approached and targeted in a intimidating manner.

Perhaps the National Trust could set aside a part of that area far from anyone else where they can engage it this sort of thing.

Wouldn't have to be any special, as b*ggers can't be choosers !

Why have a nudist beach anyway. If you want to sunbathe in the nude,do it in your own garden so anyone can walk along this beach without having to put up with naked bodies everywhere.Bound to get onlookers and undesirables on the beach looking for kicks, wardens cost money, tax payers money.close it.

There used to be quite a few naturists up at Hengistbury Head. I remember sunbathing there once (with trunks on) and turning over, only to see some bloke's hairy backside up close. Not a pretty sight.

I wouldn't have minded if it was a fit young lady, but as others have pointed out, that never seems to be the case and most naturists are wrinkly, fat or both.

The link between the wardens and the surprisingly few offenses seems quite tenuous. Are the echo saying that these are the first wardens ever to patrol the beach?

Or are the echo simply stretching a point?

I'm on two minds about nudist kids though. I'll admit I've been to the nudist beach, but before I say anything else I'm female and when i was younger some male friends took us there thinking we were going to strip. We didn't and they wasted their time, but I was surprised at the amount of children about - of all ages.

I think that if adults wish to visit a nuddy beach, fair enough, but I think where kids are concerned nudity is best kept in private. Maybe i'm overreacting, I don't know, but it made me feel uncomfortable seeing what looked like naked 8 -10 year old girls running about.

In goes on all the time and people will still find somewhere in the dunes to get up to a bit of hanky panky.
Good luck to them as long as no one else is offended.

Well I for one have a fantastic body and I am not afraid to show it off. It is the parents choice if they are bringing their children to the beach, I for one would prefer they not be there.

I shall wear as little or no swimwear to the beach as I see fit.

The article has cut part of one of the quotes. This is from the BBC web site. "Nine sex offences were reported in the area between the summers of 2005 and 2008, which Dorset Police said was low." It is an important point, and the article is no longer fair without it.

KLH had concerns about children. She can obviously have no comprehension of the damage done to children and young people as a result of censorious attitudes towards the body. The USA is probably the most prudish western country and Denmark one of the most sensible. Teenagers in Denmark are, on average, nearly a year older when they become sexually active and when they do they are more likely to use contraception and a condom and less likely to be promiscuous. The results are predictable. Nearly ten time less likely to become pregnant or to have an abortion. Over seventy times less likely to catch gonorrhoea. That pattern repeats time and again across the international comparisons. More prudish countries have worse outcomes. The harm is widespread and a lot of it is serious. Censoring the human body is nothing more than child abuse at one remove.

No, there are no nudist beaches in the UK. There is a handful of clothes optional beaches one of which is near Bournemouth.

It is long overdue that we stopped letting the prejudices of a few cause so much harm to so many.

As you know, public saunas (e.g. in swimming pools, gyms) are never mixed in Finland. (though often the steam rooms are - because you can't see much!). You are talking about private saunas in yours or someone else's home.

The Finns have some way to go yet in conquering their prudishness. The Netherlands and the German speaking countries are the places where even the public saunas are mixed and nude.

It is true, as someone else has pointed out, that there is a correlation between teen pregnancy rates and prudishness. It's a strange thing to get uncomfortable about naked bodies.

How you noticed how its mainly middle aged men prowling around looking for couples who may be getting "carried away" in the dunes, so they can watch! my friend who was with her boyfriend had 3x separate men approach them and ask if they "could watch?" and no they were not having sex they were just kissing! i don't have a problem with nudists but the area does attrack perverts and voyeurs so there's no way i'd take my family over to that area!!

Sad but true. This is probably a result of chronic prudish attitudes. If nudity were more acceptable and nudist beaches were more common this would be less likely to occur.

That is so rarely true. It's rarely the people who get a chance to decide. Governments both local and national get to make the decisions often against the will of the majority of voters.

This country has always been prudish about the body, but how many people who complain about nudist beaches have actually tried it? Yes, shenanigans in the dunes is an unpleasant side-effect, and should be stopped.

I agree with KLH and am in two minds about children. I do not particularly like seeing them myself, but can understand the argument about healthy attitudes to the body.

There is nothing wrong with the human body but a balance has to be struck. Kids shouldn't be made to feel ashamed of their bodies, but there are many ways that they can be taught this in other ways than making them run around naked on a nudist beach. Letting your children see you naked at home in private and educating them not to be ashamed of their bodies is a perfectly acceptable way. Letting them run about in public naked - especially prepubescent girls, isn't teaching them about their bodies, it is a shop window for paedos.

You are trying to have your cake and eat it. It doesn't work.

If you treat children as if they are sexual then they become sexualised and it makes the problem of paedophilia worse. If a child is sexualised according to what they are wearing then at least some types of clothing become provocative. Should there be a ban on swim suits because some paedophiles are attracted to children in swim suits? What about shorts and tee shirt? Or what about creating a climate in which children are considered inherently not sexual?

Clothing makes the body more sexual, not less. I am reliably informed by people who know about such things that there is very little nudity in ****. There is nearly always a tease, for example a bit of drapery or frilly knickers and a suggestion that they are about to be removed.

I don't think there is any evidence that paedophilia increases if children run around naked on the beach. That's just paranoia.

I'm also unconvinced by the suggestion that child sex abuse is more common in girls than boys. I believe the rates of abuse are similar.

I guess it's not the being naked that's a problem it's what you do when you are naked. It's the same problem that gets in the way of most issues, examining the wrong common denominator. All heroin addicts drink water but that doesn't mean everyone who drinks water is a heroin addict.
