POOLE Lifeboat volunteers were called to a vessel thought to be in trouble on Friday night.

The lifeboat was launched just before 10pm and the Poole Coastguard was also tasked following a call from a person watching the vessel from the shore.

The Coastguards spotted a small 14ft day boat with four youths on-board in the middle of Lytchett Bay.

Due to the particularly high tide, the Atlantic Lifeboat would have been unable to get under the bridge into Lychett Bay, so the D class was requested to launch.

The D class was soon on scene; however the vessel had made its way to shore and was greeted by the Poole Coastguards where it was checked over.

Both lifeboats returned back to station and were ready for service by midnight.

Volunteer Helm Dave Riley said: “This is what we call a false alarm with good intent and we never mind responding in these situations. We would ask the public, if you think someone is in trouble or needs help to always dial 999 and ask for the coastguard, as the time you don’t maybe that is the time that someone really does need us or we catch them, before it develops into something more serious.”
