A GROUP of friends from Poole are taking part in Europe’s biggest banger driving challenge this summer.

Alex Walsh, Reece Oliver and sisters Jasmine and Alanah Hughes are in the process of decorating their recently purchased cars for the Monte Carlo or Bust Rally.

The challenge will see them set off from Poole to Monte Carlo via Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

They will be raising money for Poole Sea Cadets to help the maritime youth charity purchase a new safety boat.

Alex, who works for the Port of Poole, said it was the first time the group had entered the rally, but they were encouraged to take part after some friends completed the challenge.

“We’re starting from Poole and will be driving back from Monte Carlo as well so we’re doing double the miles. Normally people scrap their car when they get to Monte Carlo,” he said.

“We bought the bangers for £500 in total. Mine and Reece’s car is a Volkswagen Passat Estate and the girls’ car is a Volkswagen Passat Saloon. We’ll be decorating our car as a ship with a funnel on the roof – the girls haven’t decided how to decorate their car yet. They’re going to make it a surprise for everyone on the day.”

He added: “I’ve been a part of Poole Sea Cadets since I was 12, and Reece and Jasmine were also cadets. I’m an instructor now, and we need funding for a new safety boat. We’ve got a couple already but we need a bigger and more up-to-date one.”

The Monte Carlo or Bust Rally is a three-day challenge, from May 31 to June 3, which has seen previous participants raise over £300,000 for UK charities.

The rally challenges entrants to source and decorate a banger for less than £500 and take part in a variety of fun challenges along the way, competing for points and prizes.

Rally spokesperson Simon Johnston said: “We are delighted that Alex and the team are joining us this summer on Europe’s ultimate banger rally adventure. This is a brilliant opportunity to have an amazing driving experience in one of the worst cars from Poole.”

The team now have until May to get their car and fancy dress ready for the event.
