THE future of a 90-year-old Horse Chestnut tree could be decided by planning chiefs today.

Borough of Poole's (BOP) planning committee is set to rule on a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) which is the subject of an objection - backed by 17 residents of 13 nearby properties.

These objectors, led by Ben Baker, want the preservation order overturned - thus clearing the way for the removal of the horse chestnut.

Mr Baker, who is working to renovate 59 Sandbanks Road - the property with the tree in its garden - declined to comment ahead of the planning committee hearing.

However, residents who have signed the petition argue the tree is far too large for the plot, its roots constitute a trip hazard and overhanging branches restrict access.

Next door neighbour Donald Withers, in a letter to BOP said: "I am of the opinion that this tree is far too large for the position it occupies.

"It is in poor health, the leaves are dropping very early this year, and its roots are seriously disrupting the bridleway and paths.

"The large branches overhang my parking area and the condition of these cause concern."

However, a report to councillors from head of growth and infrastructure Julian McLaughlin concludes the horse chestnut could "reasonably be considered to have at least another 20 years of life and potentially longer."

He continued: "Making a TPO does not prevent applications for proposed tree works to prune, or to fell in the future, should this be required due to disease or other arboricultural reason.

"The TPO allows the local planning authority to condition a replacement in the future and better manager its overall tree stock for the amenity and ecosystem service benefits of the wider community."

The officer recommendation to members of BOP's planning committee is to confirm the TPO without modification.

This TPO was made in October, last year, and protects the tree.
