SHE has become a local landmark yet has never had a name.

Now a huge dinosaur made out of scrap metal has been christened thanks to a social media campaign.

The dinosaur has been a fixture at W&S Waste Management Ltd, on Mannings Heath Road, Tower Park, for more than three years.

Measuring 10 metres (32ft 10ins) long and 4.5 metres (14ft 9ins) high, she was “hatched” in Dorchester seven years ago.

Digital marketing agency Bespoke 4 Business (B4B) launched a Facebook campaign to give the beast a name.

B4B, which runs the company’s social media platforms, ran a 10-day Name the Dinosaur campaign. After hundreds of responses, the winning name was Wanda.

Content marketing executive Jessie Taylor, who managed the campaign, said: “The idea of naming the iconic scrap metal dinosaur came about as we wanted to position W&S as a prominent local brand that gives something back to the community.

“As well as being very charity-minded, the W&S-supplied dinosaur is a landmark in Poole that puts a smile on many as they pass by.”

Within just a day of launching the campaign, the Facebook post had attracted more than 26,000 views and generated 800 reactions, comments and shares.

Jessie added: “We really were astounded by the response.

“Many people were commenting to say that they had been driving by the dinosaur for years and their children love it. The names that people were suggesting showed that a lot of thought was going into this too.”

By the end of the campaign, which offered the winner a John Lewis voucher supplied by W&S, the post had been seen by more than 82,000 Facebook users, with more than 2,400 actively engaging with the post. The W&S Facebook page also received over 400 page likes.

W&S Rachel Taylor and Emma Barrow chose the name from nearly 900 nominations and they eventually chose Wanda, submitted by Mike Last from Branksome.

Rachel said: “The competition really captured people’s imagination and we were overwhelmed by the response.

“We have even more exciting news connected to Wanda on the horizon that we’ll be announcing on social media soon.

“It just goes to show the impact that social media can have on a brand’s profile. The number of people that you can target and reach means that any business should seriously be considering using social media platforms to generate brand awareness, engage with their audience and drive traffic to their website. This campaign really was a great success for us and the client.”
