CAMPAIGNERS have called for one more push in the fight against controversial pay and display parking charges in Poole.

The Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs and District Residents' Association has posted a number of leaflets urging members of the public to email Borough of Poole (BOP) with their objections to the impending introduction of charges along Western Road.

It remains unclear if the timetable of the pay and display charge rollout - which has already been agreed by BOP's cabinet - can be affected by this latest effort, but campaigners are asking for support regardless.

The residents association says it objects to the scheme because of the following points:

- It is supposed to cure 'congestion'. It is ridiculous to suggest that Western Road/Beach Road is congested even in the height of summer.

- No regard has been had to the availability of off-road parking in Beach Road car park.

- The justification is also based on the 25-year seafront development plan - this is a future aspiration of the council and metering roads now is, at the very least, premature and certainly not a congestion issue.

- It is better to enhance the appearance of Beach Road car park to attract more users to a safe space near to the sea.

The association stated: "As you know, the council is proposing to instal pay and display metered parking in Western Road despite continuing overwhelming rejection of the scheme by residents.

"The association has formally objected at each stage of the scheme but you can help by lending you personal support now."

Last year Poole campaigner Bob Lister organised a petition, eventually signed by hundreds of people, that called for the pay and display - and beach car park - proposals to be thrown out by BOP.

This latest flyer urges residents to send objections to the council's by Thursday, February 23.

BOP agreed to introduce pay and display charges, along selected beach front roads

at Canford Cliffs Chine, Branksome Chine and Sandbanks, last December.

The proposed tariff, at £1.50 per hour, is set to be introduced next month.
