A FORMER Royal Marine had more than one reason to celebrate on his birthday after he was given a new hat to replace the one damaged from his time in the Corps.

Jim Harsant, who turned 97 last week, enjoyed reminiscing about his career as a physical training instructor at his birthday party.

Surrounded by family and the staff and residents at Waypoints care home in Upton, he played pass the parcel to Royal Marines marching band music while donning his red and white peaked cap.

The replacement hat was organised by staff at Waypoints, who have cared for Jim for the majority of the two years the specialist dementia care home has been open.

Sally Harper, activities coordinator, explained why the staff had decided to organise the special surprise.

“Ben Towers, a lifestyle assistant here, knew that Jim had a physical training instructor’s hat that he literally wore until it fell apart and suggested we try to get him another one.

“After some research I found a lovely contact at the Royal Marines called Vinnie Nolan, who couriered a box of memorabilia out to us for his birthday. A green beret, badges, pins, and ribbons were also included.

“All they wanted in return were some pictures for the Navy News.”

Jim, who was born on January 18, 1920, enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1939 and was based at HMS Malaya and HMS Highflyer in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon).

He became a physical training instructor in 1943. Following his years of service, he worked as a civil engineer and a clerk of works in various places across the South West.

As well as the Royal Marines-themed celebrations, Jim also enjoyed a “beautiful cake” on his birthday, Sally said. He was visited by his son and daughter-in-law, and they video called Jim’s daughter, who lives in Spain, so she could take part in the celebrations.
