A TRADITIONAL game of conkers was played at Poole Park to celebrate the heritage of the area’s Horse Chestnut trees.
Children playing in the Cygnet play area were invited to battle their shiniest conkers and claim the championship yesterday.
It is the second time the event has taken place in Poole Park.
Organiser Martin Whitchurch said: “The conkers have dropped quite early this year. I think it’s a nice thing to do to play conkers.
“There’s a lot of Horse Chestnuts in the park, which were planted for their shape and character, as well as their conkers. This event celebrates that heritage.”
He added: “Conkers is a forgotten pastime, outlawed for health and safety reasons - but there are no safety goggles or hi-vis jackets here.”
A team of volunteers have been giving up their time on a weekly basis to help with the upkeep of the 126-year-old park.
The Poole Park Life Quiet Garden project has been shortlisted for the Tesco #BagsofHelp initiative, which awards grants of up to £12,000. From October 31 until November 13, shoppers will be able to contribute to the grant.
