A man appeared in court today charged with murdering art graduate Ryan Merna.

Police were called to Wessex Road in Ashley Cross around 1.35pm on Sunday following reports of a disturbance.

On arrival officers discovered that Ryan, 29, whose parents own Compton Acres, had sustained serious stab injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is being led by Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT).

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Devoto, of MCIT, said: “Following a fast-moving and thorough investigation, we have consulted with the Crown Prosecution Service who authorised the charge of murder.

“Family liaison officers have updated Ryan’s family with this development and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“It is also important to stress – as is typical in such circumstances – that it would be entirely inappropriate for Dorset Police to comment further ahead of the trial. It is vital that the justice system is allowed to follow its course.

“Detectives continue to work on this investigation and I would appeal to any witnesses who are yet to speak with police, to contact Dorset Police. From our enquiries, we believe both men knew each other.

“Officers from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team will be carrying out high visibility patrols in the area to officer reassurance to the community and can be contacted with any concerns.”

A cordon remains in place at the flat while crime scene investigators examine the scene.

Paul Taylor, of no fixed abode, will appear at Portsmouth Crown Court tomorrow morning charged with murder.

He was referred by Bournemouth magistrates this morning after confirming his details to the clerk.

Taylor has been remanded in custody.

Mr Merna had worked at Compton Acres as an assistant curator for the last three years. His parents,  Bernard Merna, a chartered surveyor, and his wife Kaye, bought the gardens in 2002.

He had also worked as a freelance illustrator after graduating with an art degree from the University of the West of England.
