OVER 50 owners and their dogs took part in a walk for charity on Sunday morning.

The Great Poole Dog Walk, organised by the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion, raised funds for her three chosen charities and saw dogs of all shapes and sizes travel around a set route at Upton Country Park for the good causes.

Cllr Xena Dion said: "We are really delighted with the turnout as this is the first year. We are going to carry this event on year on year and make this Poole's biggest dog walk."

Jenny Gaines, 27, from Wallisdown, brought along six-month-old Bichon Frise puppy, Alfie. She said: "It was a chance for Alfie to get out and socialise with other dogs. There's lots you can do indoors, but not so many outside."

Money collected from the day will go to Waggy Tails Rescue, Lewis Manning Hospice and Chestnut Nursery.

In addition to the walk, families could also participate in a Find Fido challenge and a scavenger hunt, which was supported by Tesco Community Fund.

Arthur Poulton, who is a trustee for the Waggy Tails Rescue, said: "It was fantastic to see such a great collection of dogs.

"It shows that dogs can socialise together and have a good time. We are most grateful to the Mayor of Poole for choosing the charity as one of her chosen charities."

Each dog's owner received a goody bag provided by Oscar Pet Foods. The event was also supported by Dorset Wildlife Trust, Dorset Dogs and the Urban Heaths Partnership.
