Sports stars join 200-mile walk to help Darcy Ward

The Walk 4 Darcy was organised by father and son team, Steve Brandon and his son, Jack as a way to boost the coffers of the Darcy Ward Foundation, which was set up following his serious crash in August last year.

Steve said that he and Jack, who are from the Midlands, decided that they would walk 200 miles from the Adrian Flux Arena in King’s Lynn to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, which finished on Saturday, July 9.

When they arrived at their destination, they were met by scores of people who have followed Darcy's career and journey, dubbed The Final 1% as well as Poole Pirates stars including Greg Hancock, Chris Holder and the team's manager, Neil Middleditch, who joined them on the final mile.

Steve Brandon said: "We also had Scott Mitchell, the 2015 BDO Darts World Champion, join us for 10 miles on the ninth day of the walk.

"I work on many sports events on TV including the domestic speedway and the Speedway World Cup. I first met Darcy in 2009 and we were pretty close friends. When he became injured, I went to see him in Aylesbury Hospital and the idea suddenly came to me about the walk."

He said that he and Jack started planning the event in January with the aim of raising £20,000 for Darcy, of which they have collected £14,000 towards the total. They have until Sunday to raise the rest of the money before the Just Giving page closes.

"Once the Just Giving page closes the money will be released and can be transferred to the Darcy Ward Foundation.

"I've spoken to him many times and he has said that his next ambition is to learn to drive again, as he can now get himself out of his wheelchair and into a car.

"He is coming over at the end of July and I am sure that people will be pleased to see for themselves how the money they have donated is helping his progress."
