MOST couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary go out for a special dinner or host an intimate party with close friends and family.

But one Beacon Hill couple are throwing a charity concert and inviting the whole neighbourhood.

Les and Gill Sherlock have arranged a hog roast and concert at Lytchett Minster School on Saturday - the same day as their anniversary.

Money from the concert will be donated to the Child of Hope School in Uganda which is run by their daughter Bex Okotel.

Speaking to the Echo Gill, 73, said: "When we were talking about celebrating our Golden Wedding Anniversary I told Les that I didn't want to have a party where people brought us gifts because we don't need any more stuff.

"So we decided that maybe it would be nicer to put on a concert in aid of Bex's charity

"She has done so much good work over there but they always need more donations so hopefully this special day for us will be able to help her and all the children she takes care of."

Gill and Les were married in Derby on June 26, 1966 but moved to Poole to raise their two daughters, Bex and Rachel.

The pair now also have three grandchildren.

Gill and Les became well-known a couple of years ago when Les lost his wedding ring at the tip in Nuffield Road, Poole.

However staff at the site were quick to come to their aid and after sifting through the green waste in the 35 yard skip they were able to find the ring in just over half-an-hour.

Despite the fact that Les, now 72, has suffered recent ill health, including a heart attack and bowel cancer, the pair are determined to celebrate in style come Saturday.

As well as the hog roast there will also be music from the Sherborne School swing band and the Canford School and Lytchett Minster School jazz bands.

The event starts from 5pm on Saturday.

All welcome and tickets, £12, are available on the door.
