FORMER rower and Olympic gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave, will cut the ribbon on the second annual Daily Echo-backed Poole Harbour Boat Show.

Organised by the Poole Harbour Commissioners, the second annual event, which is being held in association with Sunseeker International, runs from May 20 to 22 on Poole Quay, featuring a range of yachts and motor cruisers, tall ships, water demonstrations, fireworks and live music.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist is set to officially open the event on Friday, May 22, during a VIP lunch reception before making an appearance at the Westover Group stand as an ambassador for Jaguar Land Rover.

Speaking about the event, Sir Steve Redgrave said: “I look forward to visiting the show and meeting sponsors, exhibitors and visitors. With leading marine, boating and lifestyle brands exhibiting as well as a packed schedule of free entertainment and fireworks, the show promises to be a spectacular weekend for all.”

Steve won five golds during five successive Olympic games from 1984 to 2000. Since retiring from competitive sport, Steve has put his efforts into establishing The Steve Redgrave Fund which aims to support disadvantaged children, young people and their communities through sport. It has raised more than £5million since launching in 2001 after joining forces with Sport Relief.

Jim Stewart, chief executive at Poole Harbour Commissioners, says: “We’re delighted to welcome Sir Steven Redgrave to Poole to celebrate the opening of our second show. Renowned as one of Britain’s greatest Olympians, Steve’s achievements during his career are inspirational and we are pleased to welcome him to the town.”

A host of quayside stands will be able to see from 1pm to 8pm on Friday, May 20, before the event fully opens from 10am to 6pm on the Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22 including public access to the pontoons on both days until 5.30pm.

The event is being supported by a number of businesses including Wave 105 who are backing the show as media partners in addition to Daily Echo.
