RESIDENTS living close to Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) have until Friday to have their say on proposals to extend its campus.

AUB has lodged an application with Borough of Poole to construct new academic buildings, a new arrivals pavilion, student accommodation and car parking spaces on land south of the current campus at Fern Barrow.

It's part of the 'Talbot Village Project', agreed in principle by Poole and Bournemouth councils last year.

However, many neighbours have already contacted Poole's planning department to register their opposition to the scheme.

They argue the proposed academic buildings and student accommodation - each set to be four storeys high - are too large, that the traffic generated by the development will cause too much congestion and that more students living on site will mean more noise.

Magdalena Baugh, of Talbot Meadows, Poole, said: "The suggested outline application for four-storey accommodation indicates significant overdevelopment and overpopulation in comparison with the surrounding buildings, especially directly neighbouring two storey homes in Charlotte Close."

Meanwhile, Clive Morris, of Charlotte Close, objecting on the grounds of extra traffic and noise from students, said: "I appreciate that AUB needs to grow; however, this is one of the last patches of green on the whole estate that will disappear."

Talbot Village Residents Association has also voiced concerns, arguing none of the planned buildings should be higher than two storeys, and that they should be 'skewed' so as not to overlook residents' properties.

Trevor Simpson of Charlotte Close, Poole, said: "I do wish to register my objections in particular to the height of the proposed student accommodation.

"Far too high indeed at four storeys and I urge rejection of this proposal."

A 68-page planning and design statement, lodged in support of the proposal on behalf of AUB, details new student accommodation for up to 300 students, academic floor space up to 13,000sqm and 220 car parking spaces to be provided south of Gillett Road.

Residents have until May 6 to lodge their support or objections with the Borough of Poole. See all the details here.
