PETITIONS of more than 10,000 signatures calling for new parking charge plans to be abandoned have come before Borough of Poole’s full council.

The five petitions were set up by Poole residents to object to proposals for on-street parking in beachside roads, at Whitecliff car park, at Lake Pier car park and at Hamworthy Park.

Presenting one at the meeting at the Civic Centre yesterday, resident Bob Lister said: “This scheme has raised much concern, as witnessed at a recent public meeting where it was overwhelmingly rejected.

“We urge you to reject this ill-thought out parking scheme before more time is spent on it.”

At the meeting yesterday evening members agreed to forward the documents on to the borough’s place overview and scrutiny committee for discussion before a final decision is made on the proposals by the authority’s cabinet.

Cllr David Brown proposed an amendment calling for the petitions and parking proposals to be debated and a decision made at a future full council meeting, however members were told by the authority’s legal adviser that according to regulations only the cabinet had this authority.

The scrutiny panel meeting takes place on May 24.
