LUXURY boatbuilder Sunseeker will be starring in a documentary following the build of one of its superyachts on Friday.

The Poole-based company has allowed the BBC behind the scenes of its production line. The programme, called ‘Britain’s Biggest Superyachts’ sees the film crew document the build of the company’s new 131 Yacht through to its launch.

The documentary, which will be shown on BBC Two at 9pm, involved ten months of filming. Viewers will see footage capturing the journey of the 131 superyacht from concept to build at the manufacturing facility at West Quay Road and then through to final delivery.

The 40m yacht worth £20million was launched at the London Boat Show in January and was the largest model ever to make its debut in London. It is the first of several new models set for launch this year.

The one-hour documentary sees Sunseeker’s most challenging specification to date when a customer takes full advantage of their made to measure service and asks for more extras than any other yacht in the history of the company.

When it falls behind schedule, the viewers get a glimpse into the challenges the company faces in creating luxury for the super-rich.

In a preview clip of the show, Sunseeker staff are seen discussing the client's request. Staff are told: "He doesn't want to have to get out of bed to see the sunlight," and "This is a special toilet, with heated seat and massaging function."

While the Poole shipyard works hard to meet the customer’s exacting standards, the London sales team are attempting to sell over £40m worth of boats in just 30 days during the boat show season.

As well as documenting the build in its Dorset shipyards, filming also shows the charter side of the business, meeting the people paying £60,000 for just a week’s holiday.

Sunseeker announced in January this year that it would be hiring 225 skilled staff in Dorset rather than the previously announced 100.

It said it was looking at a “very strong” order book for 2016, boosted by plans for several new models.

The company said last year that it had made a loss of £41million in 2014 but said it expected to return to profit in 2016. Its 131 Yacht, revealed last autumn, is the first of three models set for launch this year.
