NEW charges on more than 20 residential roads close to Poole's beaches could be introduced under proposals coming before councillors tonight.

Borough of Poole's cabinet is to considering going out to public consultation on plans to extend on-street parking charges in Flaghead Chine, Canford Cliffs Chine, Branksome Chine, and the Sandbanks Peninsula.

Roads in the consultation include Cliff Drive, Pinewood Road, Western Road, Brudenell Avenue and Panorama Road.

According to the plans fees would be charged from March 1 to October 31 between 8am and 6pm, starting at £1.50 for one hour - but could go as high as £15 for 10 hours under one of two parking tariff options under consideration.

While the council anticipates it would spend almost £466,000 implementing the scheme, it could generate as much as £319,000 per year.

A report by Julian McLaughlin, head of transportation, said: "Residents may oppose having to pay to park near their homes; however, they may find that the cost of buying a beach season ticket is good value if it allows them to find a space more easily due to a reduction in the number of persons parking in their respective areas."

If it gets the go ahead tonight the council will launch a £20,000 public consultation.
