TALENTED students have created a giant mural to decorate the high profile perimeter fence shielding a £14.5 million building project for a new Audi auto sales and car care terminal in Poole.

The 12 students and two tutors involved in the project have transformed the dull security hoardings around the site into in what they hope will be a real head-turner.

Thousands of motorists drive past the site in Old Wareham Road every day and the aim of the mural is to brighten up an otherwise drab outlook.

The themes of the project are ones everyone in Dorset can identify with, centred on the famous and the not so famous county landmarks.

Jane Jenkins, HND Graphic Design Course leader, said: "It was an exciting challenge for our second year students. They have been committed to this work for weeks and gave up their time during the summer break to researching and getting the project started. We understand the Audi terminal will itself become a new landmark in the area."

Construction work has already begun for the terminal on a site covering about four acres. The new building will eventually occupy 60,000 square metres.

When completed it will become one of the biggest Audi Centres in the UK. David Kelly, managing director of Ocean Automotive, the parent company behind Audi, told the local media recently: "The site is three times the size of the current Poole Audi showroom, workshop and offices."

James Foster, of BDB Design Build Ltd of Sheffield, the design company behind the project, said: "This truly stunning piece of work by the students will remind people what a beautiful county they live in and at the same time enhance The Bournemouth and Poole College’s reputation for art and graphics."
