CONDOR FERRIES, whose troubled flagship Condor Liberation again suffered engine problems last weekend, has scooped a top Poole Tourism Award.

Organisers have defended their decision to award the Poole-based company, whose £50million fast ferry has had numerous teething troubles since first sailing to the Channel Islands this spring, with Development of the Year Award, one of five top prizes presented during a ceremony at the Haven Hotel.

Bruce Grant-Braham, chairman of Poole Tourism Partnership, said: “Whilst we know there have been a number of teething problems and recent operational issues, Condor Ferries has been given the award for the benefits and impact it has on Poole and its tourism offer.

"By making Poole the base for their direct route to the Channel Islands, Condor has provided a massive boost to the local economy, benefitting accommodation providers, restaurants and other local businesses. Any new service will experience issues, but we know that the company is working exceptionally hard to deal with them and put right any problems. We wish them well with the service and look forward to a highly successful Condor business operating in Poole.”

Jonathan Sibbett, director at sponsor Sibbett Gregory, said: “The purpose of Poole’s Tourism Awards, and in particular Development of the Year, is to recognise those that have a significant impact beyond their own business, on tourism and the reputation of the town.

"Condor’s decision to invest in the Liberation and decision to move their base to Poole, has stimulated the local economy and provided a major positive influence on tourism in the area. This award is a chance to acknowledge their investment and confidence in Poole which is benefitting so many other businesses.”

The other award winners were:

Tourism Promotion of the Year - the inaugural Poole Harbour Boat Show, organised by Poole Harbour Commissioners, which attracted more than 15,000 visitors to Poole Quay in May and is an annual event.
