THE Lighthouse in Poole is calling on supporters to help raise funds for the final stages of the venue’s refurbishment next summer.

The campaign, Love Lighthouse is encouraging donations to help hit the final £400,000 needed to complete a multi-million pound refurbishment to bring the charity-funded venue fully up to date.

Although located in a town of only 140,000 people, it is one of the largest arts centres in the UK and is firmly focused on the needs of the local community. It presents a wide range of performances normally only seen in much larger towns and cities, while supporting the creation and development of work by local artists.

The combination of 250,000 visitors every year and the rigours of austerity have taken their toll on Lighthouse.

Although the building had a major facelift over a decade ago, areas backstage and some of our facilities date back to the building’s opening in 1978.

“Lighthouse is a cornerstone of cultural and community life in Poole,” says Lighthouse Chief Executive Elspeth McBain.

“Securing Lighthouse’s place as a nationally important cultural icon in Poole, the refurbishment will radically improve the facilities Lighthouse provides for the artists, audiences, schools and community groups who enjoy, create and present great art here.

"Our transformed arts centre will cement its reputation as a creative destination, where artists can develop their craft and the best touring companies are keen to perform.”
