THE elderly man who was cut free from his car after it was involved in a two-vehicle smash that destroyed a pub wall on Friday has died in hospital.

Police, fire and paramedics attended the accident at the crossroads near the Rose and Crown pub, Lytchett Matravers.

At first it was not thought that the injuries sustained by the 91-year-old Mercedes driver were serious. However, the pensioner - from Lytchett Matravers - died in hospital the following day.

The other driver involved in the incident, an 84-year-old from Swanage who was driving a white Ford Transit Connect van was uninjured.

Police constable Lee Savage, of Dorset Police's traffic unit, said: "Initially the injuries sustained in this collision were not thought to have been serious. But sadly the driver of the Mercedes died in hospital the following day.

"I am appealing to anyone who witnessed or saw either vehicle being driven to the incident, to please call me.

"All calls will be treated in the strictest confidence."

The accident happened on Friday, September 8, at 12.54pm on Huntick Road at the junction of Wareham Road outside the pub.
