A COMMUNITY is coming together for the second year to commemorate the life of a much-loved man with a football tournament held in his honour.

Family man and keen footballer Shane Stanley from Turlin Moor died suddenly from an undetected heart condition in January 2014 at the age of 31.

Shocked family and friends organised the day of fun and football competition last year with 32 six-a-side teams battling it out for The Stanley Cup, which now has a new shield to go alongside it.

This has now become an annual event and is being staged on Saturday from 10am to 6pm at Turlin Moor Recreation Ground.

“It was a brilliant success last year,” said his mum, Sue Stanley.

The fun day raised an amazing £13,500 which earlier this year funded a screening day at Hamworthy by the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), which resulted in one referral for investigation from more than 90 scans.

“Having the screening day and saving one person, it was fantastic,” said Sue.

This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever with 32 teams already signed up and even some in reserve.

All of Shane’s family and friends are involved in the day-long event which promises something for everyone from cake stalls to 100ft inflatables for children, a climbing wall, pottery, photo-booth, nail and face painting, craft stall, knitting club and much else.

Sue and fellow organiser Julie Bagwell have also been busy seeking sponsorship and donations for a massive raffle, which has more than 100 super prizes lined up ranging from a smart TV to pamper baskets.

There is a kids' football competition, in which last year Shane’s children Connor, Ellie and Josh were involved, and wife Vikki was on hand as a now well-used bench in his name was unveiled.

“We wanted something that was going to be a fun day because that’s what Shane was – he was all for fun and full of life and doing everything,” said Sue.

Julie said: “We want to thank everyone who has supported us and hope to see everyone on the day.”
