IT was full steam ahead for thousands of visitors in Poole making their way to the Mini Steam on the Quay event on Saturday.

Under glorious sunny skies up to 4,000 people came to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the bygone age of steam as some 20 miniature steam engines brought the quay to life.

And the star of the show was a full size 1909 Stanley Model R steam car which took four years to rebuild also offering rides for fans young and old.

Poole Tourism manager Graham Richardson, speaking from the quay on Saturday, said the sixth annual Mini Steam on the Quay had been a resounding success.

"There has been a great crowd down here and everyone has had a really good day," he added.

"Children and adults too have all enjoyed rides up and down the quay. The weather has been superb. Thanks to all the enthusiasts who gave their time up for it and showcased their engines which are their pride and joy. It's a regular event in the Poole calendar and we are looking forward to doing it all again next year."
