FIREFIGHTERS have called for vigilance when using candles in the home, following a “substantial” Poole property fire that left a young woman needing hospital treatment.

Around 30 Dorset Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) firefighters attended the incident at a building next to the Quarterdeck Hotel on the Civic Centre gyratory system, Sandbanks Road, on Wednesday evening.

Since then investigators say they believe the cause of the blaze, which started in a first-floor bedroom, was an unattended candle.

According to DFRS figures, there have been 26 accidental Dorset home fires caused by candles over the past two years.

Steve Underhill, fire investigation officer at the Sandbanks Road incident, said: “We believe the cause of this fire to have been unattended candles.

“Candles can be used for their fragrance and mood lighting. However, if you are using candles please make sure they are kept on a proper heat proof base like a plate and they are never left unattended. Whether or not you are using candles, please make sure you have a working smoke alarm in your home which will give you an early warning if you are unlucky enough to have a fire.”

During the Sandbanks Road fire a young woman was taken to Poole Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Two dogs were also rescued from the property, which suffered “significant” damage in the bedroom where the blaze started.

Poole fire station watch manager Paul Webber told the Daily Echo: “There were concerns the fire might take and affect the whole property. It was dealt with quickly.”

DFRS provide free home safety checks where, if appropriate, smoke alarms will be fitted free of charge.
