A MUM-of-two from Poole was shocked to find pieces of glass in the bottom of her takeaway Costa coffee.

Charlene Sweeney, 26, visited the Costa coffee shop in Falkland Square where she purchased a latte for herself and a chocolate babycino for six-year-old daughter, Tiya.

She got to the bottom of the drink and found specks of glass twinkling back at her and one large piece of glass in the base of the cup.

Charlene immediately panicked and checked Tiya’s drink, but fortunately couldn’t find anything in the paper cup.

She said: “It surprised me. The chunk of glass was at the bottom and was so heavy that it wouldn’t have floated to the top.

“I went back to Costa the next day and cried as I told the manager what had happened and she said that she hadn’t been in that day and wasn’t aware.”

Charlene said the glass was handed to Environmental Health at Borough of Poole to investigate further.

“I used to be a regular customer in there, going nearly every day, and now I will never go in there again.

“I understand that they are really busy in Costa but they have a duty of care to their customers.”

The Daily Echo contacted Costa and Charlene was later offered £100 by the company by way of apology.

A spokesman for Costa said: “Our area manager has spoken to Ms Sweeney and apologised for the distress this obviously caused her.

“This was an isolated incident and does not reflect our high standards of safety and hygiene.”

Jeff Morley, team manager in environmental and consumer protection, said: “An officer visited Costa Coffee following the complaint.

“The piece of glass did not match any glass in the premises and the manager was not aware of any breakages.

“The staff are following the company procedure in respect of any breakages and we are not taking any further action.”
