A Poole man due to be sentenced for racially abusing a shop owner appeared in court last month after stealing from his mother.

Michael Day, pictured, of Fernside Road in Poole, pleaded guilty to one count of burglary at Bournemouth Magistrates Court, having stolen a laptop and Samsung tablet from his home address the day before.

The 19-year-old had earlier this year admitted using abusive and racist language to Turkish shop owner Salman Altun at the latter’s shop – Best One in Ashley Road, Parkstone.

In relation to the burglary, prosecutor Jason Spelman said Day had been stopped by officers near his home as they were suspicious about a black bag and gloves he was carrying, and they soon realised there was a warrant out for his arrest for failing to surrender to the court.

By the time they reached Poole Police Station, Day’s family had called to report a burglary, which was witnessed by a neighbour.

Mr Spelman said Day’s mother had provided a lengthy statement.

“She said the defendant lived at the house for eight years and there had been a lot of problems, she thinks connected to his drug use,” he said.

“She said she realised she was making a statement against her son but ‘he can’t do this to me any longer’.”

In mitigation for Day, David Hurley said his “family situation” had “completely broken down”.

“He is at a vulnerable point in his life where it would be quite easy to go down the wrong track.”

Day had to manhandled out of Mr Altun’s shop after abusing him back in August. He swore and told him to “get out of my country” after the shopkeeper told him to show his ID for cigarettes.

He later told police that he considered himself to be “racist”.

Day, who has no previous convictions, has entered guilty pleas to one charge of burglary, one of causing racially or religiously aggravated fear or provocation of violence, and two of failing to surrender.

He was released on conditional bail to return to court for sentencing on November 20.
