KIND-hearted students and staff from Montacute School in Poole are set to complete a sponsored walk and wheelchair push for two charities.

The students are planning to walk from Bournemouth Pier to Boscombe Pier on November 20, and are asking the local community to get behind them and sponsor their efforts.

The walk is 1.5 miles one way, and three miles for those capable of completing it both ways, and the children are dividing the money they raise between the RNLI and the school’s own Monty’s Fundraising Appeal.

The outstanding school for children with severe, profound or multiple learning difficulties, is set to move out of its dilapidated setting into a brand new building under construction in its Canford Heath grounds.

But the £5m government funding for the project provides just the basic shell and falls short of equipping the building – even with essential kit, like hoists for the most immobile children.

The fundraising target to fill the school and outside space was £500,000. An amazing £240,000 has been raised from trusts and individuals – leaving £260,000 to find before the school opens in September 2015.

The students hope that the money raised from their walk will go towards an outside sandpit with special outside hoist to make it truly accessible to all the children. The sponsored event is also part of the students’ Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award.

“This will be a real achievement especially for our less mobile children,” said school fundraiser Vicki Edwards.

“Please support this event, every penny will count.”

Donations of cash or cheques can be forwarded to Montacute School directly either by post or by hand.
