RESIDENTS of Poole are holding a public meeting to present their own vision for a major town centre road system.

With weeks to go before Borough of Poole’s planning and transportation departments are due to recommend changes to the road system between Hunger Hill and the two lifting bridges, Poole Quays Forum members have come up with their own ideas.

They will present their proposals for the vital area that links the town centre and the railway station with Hamworthy and the port.

PQF has been working with Phil Jones and Jon Dowty, independent professional advisors, to produce a scheme which has taken into account all road users, including vehicles, bus and rail users, cyclists and pedestrians.

Also considered is the importance of the area in relation to business and commerce and the quality of the area to the local community and visitors.

“Our analysis indicates that our proposals, which are an alternative to the ‘gyratory’ system, are workable and beneficial for businesses and offer more sustainable ways of getting around the town,” said Phil Jones.

“This would significantly reduce the impact of traffic on the local community, improve the environment and make it easier for local businesses to offer their employees viable and safe alternatives to the car when travelling to and from work.”

Bill Constance, PQF’s chairman, is keen to give residents and local businesses the chance to review and discuss proposals that will be included in the draft local Neighbourhood Plan.

“We’ve looked at examples of more sensitively designed highway improvements which have transformed the fortunes of their town centre and strengthened investor confidence. But it’s important we hear everyone’s views,” he said.

The public meeting is being held on Wednesday, October 22, at 6pm in the town centre and anyone wanting to attend should contact PQF on info@poolequaysforum.co.uk.
