A DOLPHIN found dead on a beach in Poole Harbour is believed to be the same one rescued near Sandbanks over the weekend.
The common dolphin was found dead yesterday on the beach near Baiter and has been taken away for a post mortem examination.
Julie Hatcher, marine awareness officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust said: “It’s highly likely it is the same one. We don’t get common dolphins in Poole Harbour.
“It’s very unlikely there would be two.”
She believed the creature must have been sick and beaching in the harbour. Common dolphins are seen offshore while the cetaceans normally spotted in Poole Bay and at Durlston are bottlenose dolphins.
Paddleboarders Andy Gratwick and Charlie Gregory, helped by Carl Woodward, rescued a dolphin when it ran aground on Sunday morning and guided it back into deeper water.
However, a post mortem examination on the dolphin found at Baiter could find out what was wrong with it and why it came inshore.
Dead, stranded dolphins should be reported to the Natural History Museum on 0207 942 5155.
