MORE than 20 volunteers gave the car park at a former Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway station a spring clean at the weekend to make it more welcoming for visitors.
North Dorset Railway Trust trustee and Shilli-ngstone Station retail manager Bill Munden said: “We’re clearing up the parking area.
“Everything we get given gets dumped here. It’s been rather scruffy and we’re making it look a bit more pleasant.”
Some of the donated material includes timber, due to be used for the rebuilding of the “down” platform shelter and the signal box.
The weekend’s work provided an opportunity for the enthusiast group to get its diesel shunter out and run it up and down the short length of track that has recently been laid there.
The station is currently open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday mornings between 10am and 4pm.
Mr Munden said if more volunteers come forward, opening could be extended for more days during the summer months. Contact him on 07989 446273.
