CAMPAIGNERS battling for a bypass to save their villages from heavy goods vehicles have rejected County Hall plans for a voluntary one-way system.
County Hall traffic chiefs have suggested sending heavy lorries north from Blandford on the C13 and bringing them south from Shaftesbury on the A350.
But the chairman of the Dorset Road Group, Ann Kaile, said the group believed that encouraging HGV traffic to use the “North Dorset corridor” in both directions would cause further misery for villagers.
“The fear is that once HGVs believe they can use the C13/B3081, the voluntary concept will be totally ignored and yet again Melbury Abbas and Cann Common end up with the bulk of the traffic,” said Mrs Kaile.
Noise, pollution, and property damage was already commonplace for villagers living near the A350 and C13, she said, adding that both roads were entirely unsuitable for carrying the majority of traffic through North Dorset.
“We have asked that Dorset Country Council put all their resources into delivering the bypasses that have been promised to all the villages in the A350 corridor”.
A meeting of Melbury Abbas Parish Council will now disc-uss the plans tomorrow.
