This popular family-run fish and chip shop and restaurant first opened in 1989. It underwent a major refurbishment in 2015 and has been visited by the likes of Hollywood actor Jack Black and musician Jools Holland who said he'll often pop in when he's in the area.

And they're not alone as queues can often be seen out the door most evenings.

One happy customer on Tripadvisor called it "the best fish and chip restaurant in the country" and another said "the batter is always crisp and the fish is very fresh".

Malvern Road Fisheries received several nominations from our readers with people praising the quality and price of the food.

A Tripadvisor reviewer said: "This place is a hit with the locals...I can see why! Very fresh fish and chips (we had 2 large cod and chips). Service was rapid, food cooked to order and the staff we incredibly friendly. Clear distancing measures in place also to protect customers as well as staff. Also good value for money, definitely worth supporting at this very difficult time."

Lakeside Fish & Chips, Lifeboat Quay, Poole

Open 12noon to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 12noon to 9pm Sunday, click and collect available

Bournemouth Echo:

Lakeside Fish Restaurant has twice been voted Dorset's favourite chippy and has a takeaway and a restaurant, both of which are currently open.

On the takeaway menu you'll find cod, plaice, haddock, ray wing, scampi, whitebait and even king prawns in batter, plus you can also get fish cooked on the griddle.

One Tripadvisor review reads: "We ate in the restaurant. At first glance it might seem expensive for fish and chips. But the food and service was excellent. Homemade and so fresh, well worth it. Must try the calamari starter! Better service than some of the high end, overpriced restaurants in the area. This will be a regular chip stop when we are visiting in the future."

Nick The Fish, Penn Hill Avenue, Poole

Open 12pm to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm Tuesday to Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday, delivery available through Deliveroo

Husband and wife team should be congratulated for establishing such a delightful standard. Whosoever reads this must savour the delicious menu, guys you got to sample the fantastic fish and chips."

This fish and chip shop promises to cook your fish to your "exact requirements" whether in standard or light batter, breaded or steamed, which may be why it's such a hit with our readers.

Fresh fish, sustainable produce and food "that won't break the bank" are also high on chippies agenda.

One Tripadvisor review says: "Found this place off the coeliac website and was not disappointed! Absolutely amazing food and at a really reasonable price. The same food in Kent costs us double this and isn’t anywhere near as nice. Staff really helpful. Clearly marked gluten free food so not confused with other members of the family. Was so good we can back twice in one week! Brilliant Covid arrangements in place too."
