PEOPLE are being encouraged to saddle up for a special event this spring to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity.

The ride, organised by Organised by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service’s cycling section, will take place on Sunday, May 27.

Starting from Shaftesbury fire station at 9am, the sportive offers two routes, each incorporating the beautiful countryside of Dorset and Wiltshire.

The first route is approximately 30 miles and is described as fairly flat with “one or two ups and downs.”

The second route is more challenging at 75 miles and covers both flat and undulating roads.

Both routes will have feed stations, recovery and mechanical assistance.

Firefighter Lee McCumiskey, one of the organisers, said: “Although the event is being run by Fire and Rescue Service personnel, it is open to anyone who enjoys cycling and would like to get involved. We’re limiting entries to 100 riders to keep it safe and enjoyable for everyone, and the entry fee is £15 per person.

“Half of that will cover costs, and half will go to the Fire Fighters Charity – we’ve also got support from Cycle Paths of Poole, and we are very grateful to them for that.”

It is also hoped that a former Tour de France 'King of the Mountains' winner will be taking part.

Anyone who would like to get involved can email Lee at lee.mccumiskey@dwfire.org.uk or Paul Ticehurst at paul.ticehurst@dwfire.org.uk
