A PROPOSAL, sunny skies, thousands of visitors and impressive steam engines have helped to make this year's Great Dorset Steam fair one of the best, say organisers.

The five-day event saw crowds flock to the showground at Tarrant Hinton, near Blandford, with the new dates proving to be a success.

Over the weekend, heavy horse teams went head-to-head, and a church service was held on Sunday, led by the show chaplain.

And Bank Holiday Monday also proved to be a busy day, thanks in part to the warm weather.

The winner of this year's Michael Oliver Memorial Cup for best exhibit was Nigel Myers in the 'Organ Square', made up of organs from across the UK and as far as Holland.

Martin Oliver, the fair's managing director, said: "In the past, the final day of the event has been a bit quieter but Monday has been a busy show day.

"I think people have come out to make the most of their bank holiday and of course, we have been blessed with amazing weather.

"We have seen lots more families this year and had some really positive feedback. The atmosphere has been fantastic and we are really pleased.

"I would like to thank all our exhibitors for supporting us with the change of dates. I think it has been universally accepted that it was the right move to safeguard the future of our event."

The weekend also saw hundreds of visitors gather to see dozens of gleaming showman's engines blow their whistles as the clock struck midnight on the last night.

And it also proved a special night for Kirsty Barker and Adam McKay, who got engaged during the popular whistle fanfare.

The proposal took place next to 'Countess', a Garrett 4NHP showman's tractor the couple help to maintain with their friends, Chris and Robert Gliddon.

Peter Sewell with his 1979 Scammell Amazon won the trophy for Diesel Heavy Haulage on his first visit to the steam fair.

The Arthur Field Memorial Cup for Best Working Exhibit was awarded to Graham Avery, who brought the family Aveling and Porter 10-Ton Roller.

And the Jim Hutchens Memorial Cup for Best Steam Wagon was awarded to Mike Dreeland from Aberdeen.
