NESTING birds have been disturbed by Forestry Commission timber operations this spring it is claimed.

Brian Tarnoff, a member of the New Forest Association’s management committee, told the June Court of Verderers the organisation was broadly in favour of the stream restoration project being carried out on Fletcher’s Water near Rhinefield.

But he added: “The timber removal has taken place at a time sure to disturb nesting birds when they are most vulnerable.”

The Forestry Commission’s deputy surveyor of the New Forest, Mike Seddon, told the Daily Echo: “We do our best to avoid disturbance of birds... in the nesting season we will always do pre-felling checks.

“We did checks at this site and stopped felling before we planned as we identified areas where protected birds were nesting.”
